The new Superman suit has made its official debut as filming progresses on James Gunn’s “Superman” (formerly “Superman: Legacy”). The writer-director shared a first look at star David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel on his Threads account. One notable aspect of the suit is its dirty and weathered appearance, indicating that Superman will likely be engaging in a considerable amount of gritty combat in the film.

Gunn further elaborated on Threads that the first look photo “was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”

David Corenswet is stepping into the spotlight with a significant opportunity as the lead in “Superman,” marking his first time headlining a major Hollywood tentpole film. The 30-year-old actor gained recognition for his supporting roles in two Netflix series created by Ryan Murphy, namely “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” Before “Superman,” Corenswet’s most notable film appearance was likely in “Pearl,” a horror movie directed by Ti West and starring Mia Goth.

In “Superman,” David Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy-winning star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” who will portray Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult is set to play the iconic villain Lex Luthor. James Gunn’s ensemble cast also includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and several other talented actors.

Originally named “Superman: Legacy,” Gunn announced in February that the title would be shortened to simply “Superman.” Around that time, Gunn also shared the first cast photo from the movie’s inaugural table read of the script. Rachel Brosnahan expressed her excitement at hearing Gunn’s words spoken aloud during the table read, describing it as a thrilling experience, as she mentioned to Variety at this year’s SAG Awards.

“It was pretty amazing,” Brosnahan remarked about the table read. “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud. As with all of these films, there’s a lot of action sequences and things. So to hear the pacing of the film and to get to hear these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It’s also a great group. You can’t ask for more than that when doing something like this.”
