Scathing Attack: Chasing Personal Milestones Destroyed Pakistan’ – Calls for Babar Azam, Shaheen, Rizwan’s Sacking

Scathing AttackChasing personal milestones destroyed Pakistan': Babar Azam, Shaheen, Rizwan's sacking demanded in scathing attack

Pakistan has been one of the most consistent teams in T20 World Cup history, making it to the semifinals in six of the nine editions, with three appearances in the final and one championship win in 2009. However, they faced a significant setback in 2024, experiencing a surprising group-stage exit. They were stunned by the USA in their opener and narrowly lost to India in a thrilling match. Despite securing a win against Canada earlier this week, their chances were thwarted when the USA-Ireland match was washed out due to rain in Florida. This result allowed the co-hosts, the USA, to join India as the two teams from Group A advancing to the Super Eight.

Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan were seen running between the wickets during the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup 2024 Group A cricket match between Pakistan and Canada.

In the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing exit, veteran batter Ahmed Shehzad launched another blistering critique, targeting not only captain Babar Azam but also several senior players, the team management, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Shehzad even called for the removal of Babar, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Haris Rauf.

“For the past five years, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, and Haris Rauf have played together and received ample opportunities, but they have consistently failed to deliver,” Shehzad said on ‘Haarna Mana Hai’ on Geo News.

Shehzad accused the team of lacking leadership, forming cliques, and prioritizing personal milestones over team success, citing the match against Canada as an example.

“The kind of groupings happening in the team show a clear lack of leadership. They keep saying they’re learning from their mistakes, but what exactly are they learning? Against Canada, when we needed to increase our run rate, Rizwan scored the slowest fifty, and Babar made runs at a run-a-ball pace. There were no demons on that pitch,” Shehzad criticized.

“The problem is that players chasing personal milestones have ruined Pakistan cricket. That’s why we are in this situation right now. They haven’t learned anything. There is no leadership in this team. Babar, you’re just a social media-generated king. You’ve had four to five years, but you guys play politics and lack the required fitness levels. You’ve played your peak cricket, and now your performance is declining. You’ve not allowed anyone else to come into the team. Until now, you’ve maintained friendships only,” he added.

The 32-year-old also criticized Mohsin Naqvi, the chief of PCB, for reinstating Babar as captain just weeks before the T20 World Cup and for appointing Wahab Riaz as selector.

“PCB chairman, who joined two months ago, has already made two poor decisions in his tenure. First, he reinstated Babar Azam as captain, which was the worst decision because Babar had been given enough chances. He was tried and tested. Then he appointed Wahab Riaz as selector, who has handled things very unprofessionally in the past two months,” Shehzad said.

Reiterating his earlier remarks, Shehzad demanded the removal of all the senior players, accusing them of playing politics in the Pakistan dressing room.

“People will try to scare the PCB chief by saying that removing 7-8 cricketers will damage the team’s aura. But these are the players who are prioritizing friendships over the country. Removing just two or three of them would be unjust. Remove all of them,” he concluded. Scathing Attack
