Shimron Hetmyer of the Rajasthan Royals has been fined 10% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 24, according to a statement by the BCCI. Hetmyer was found guilty of misconduct after he smashed the stumps in frustration upon being bowled by Sunrisers’ left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma. He admitted to the Level 1 offence and accepted the sanction.
The sanction was imposed by former India pacer and match referee for the second Qualifier, Javagal Srinath. “Hetmyer committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the BCCI stated. Shimron Hetmyer
As usual, the BCCI did not delve into the specifics of the incident leading to the breach, but it is likely due to Hetmyer’s show of dissent after being dismissed. The incident occurred in the 14th over of Rajasthan Royals’ chase. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s left-arm spinners, Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Ahmed, were effectively stifling the RR batters. Hetmyer, a key player for the inaugural edition’s champions, was their last hope.
Abhishek Sharma adjusted his length on the fourth ball of the over, delivering it flat and fast. The ball fizzed off the pitch, and Hetmyer misjudged its pace. The West Indies batter was too late in bringing his bat down, and the ball crashed into his off stump, ending his painful stint at the crease. Shimron Hetmyer
Hetmyer, visibly distraught, struck the wickets with his bat in frustration before taking the long walk back to the pavilion, having scored only 4 off 10 balls.
That wicket sealed Rajasthan Royals’ fate. Despite Dhruv Jurel’s valiant effort, they fell short by 36 runs, allowing Sunrisers Hyderabad to advance to the final.
SRH spinners stifle RR
After being sent in to bat, SRH posted a total of 175 for nine, thanks to Heinrich Klaasen’s 34-ball 50 and valuable contributions from Travis Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37). Shimron Hetmyer
In reply, Rajasthan Royals could manage only 139 for 7 in 20 overs, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (42) and Dhruv Jurel (56 not out) contributing the bulk of the scoring.
Earlier, the pace duo of Trent Boult (3/45) and Avesh Khan (3/27) took three wickets each, while Sandeep Sharma (2/25) claimed two wickets after RR won the toss and elected to bowl.
For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shahbaz Ahmed (3/23) and Abhishek Sharma (2/24) shared five wickets, while Pat Cummins (1/30) and T Natarajan (1/13) each took one. Shimron Hetmyer
