RCB vs RR: Who Advances If IPL 2024 Eliminator Gets Washed Out Due to Rain

Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals are set for a critical showdown in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Eliminator against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The match, scheduled for Wednesday, is a do-or-die situation for the Royals as they aim to overcome their recent slump and stay in the tournament. RCB vs RR

Earlier in the season, the Royals were strong contenders for the top spot in the league standings. However, a sequence of four consecutive defeats, coupled with a washed-out game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led to a significant drop in their position. These setbacks resulted in Rajasthan finishing third, just behind Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Facing RCB, who have been in impressive form, the Royals will need to muster all their resources and resilience. Captain Sanju Samson will be crucial in leading his team through this challenging phase, ensuring that they perform at their best to advance in the competition.

On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have made a remarkable comeback from the brink of elimination. After losing seven of their first eight games this season, Faf du Plessis and his team have embarked on a sensational run, securing six consecutive victories. This impressive turnaround culminated in their recent triumph over the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, which secured RCB a berth in the playoffs.

While Rajasthan Royals are coming off a string of four losses and a rained-off game, RCB’s winning streak has sent a clear message to their rivals that they are serious contenders in the playoffs. However, there is a potential concern that rain could disrupt RCB’s momentum and jeopardize their chances of advancing to Qualifier 2. The weather could play a pivotal role, adding an extra layer of uncertainty to this high-stakes Eliminator match.

If the RCB vs RR Eliminator gets washed out, specific protocols will come into play according to the IPL 2024 Match Playing Conditions. Rule 13.7.3 states that an additional 120 minutes (two hours) are available to complete a match in case of rain delays. This rule applied during the league stage and continues into the playoffs, where an additional Reserve Day is also available.

“For the play-off matches, in addition to the extra time referred to above, there may be reserve days (on which an incomplete play-off match shall be completed).”

Unlike previous IPL editions, this season includes a Reserve Day for all playoff matches, including the final on May 26. On the Reserve Day, the match will start afresh, ensuring a complete contest.

However, if no play is possible even after utilizing the Reserve Day and organizers cannot conduct even a Super Over, the team that finished higher in the league stage will advance. Therefore, if the Eliminator between RCB and RR is entirely washed out, Rajasthan Royals will progress due to their higher league stage finish.
