On April 28, Chennai Super Kings’ iconic player, MS Dhoni, etched his name in IPL history by becoming the first player to be part of 150 victories. This milestone was achieved as CSK triumphed over Sunrisers Hyderabad by 78 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Dhoni, a stalwart of the IPL since its inception in 2008, has played 259 matches and holds the record for the most IPL titles as captain. Widely regarded as the most successful captain in the T20 league, he boasts 133 wins under his leadership.

In the thrilling encounter on Sunday, CSK’s victory was fueled by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s stellar 98, Daryl Mitchell’s composed 52, and fast-bowler Tushar Deshpande’s impressive four-wicket haul. This win marked Chennai Super Kings’ return to form after a two-match losing streak, propelling them to a commanding 78-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 46 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. On a dry pitch, Gaikwad fell just two runs short of achieving back-to-back IPL centuries, while Mitchell registered his maiden fifty in the tournament, guiding CSK to a formidable total of 212/3 in 20 overs.

In reply, SRH were never in it to chase it down and were eventually bowled out for 134 in 18.5 overs, which is also their second straight attempt over not acing a batting second innings. Deshpande struck thrice in Power-play to pick IPL-best figures of 4-22 and lead a brilliant bowling performance for CSK.

Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman (two wickets each), Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur (one scalp each) were also amongst the wicket-takers for CSK.

The big victory is also CSK’s 50th IPL win at Chepauk and it takes them from sixth to third place on the points table, where they are now tied on 10 points with SRH, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals.

Punjab Kings not only secured a thrilling victory with their remarkable chase but also etched a new milestone by achieving their highest IPL total ever. Surpassing their previous record of 232 runs, set against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011, Punjab Kings showcased their batting prowess in a spectacular display.

The driving force behind Punjab Kings’ historic triumph was opener Jonny Bairstow, whose explosive innings of 108 not out off just 48 deliveries left spectators mesmerized. Supported by Prabhsimran Singh’s blistering 54 off 20 balls, Punjab Kings laid the foundation for their extraordinary chase.

In accomplishing this feat, Punjab Kings surpassed South Africa’s previous record for the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket, eclipsing the Proteas’ chase of 259 runs against West Indies in 2023. Additionally, Punjab Kings equaled Royal Challengers Bangalore’s record for the most runs scored in the second innings of a T20 match.
